In the evolving landscape of contemporary design, the balance between form and function has become more critical than ever. As designers strive to create pieces that not only serve a practical purpose but also resonate emotionally with users, the fusion of aesthetics, utility, and meaning emerges as a powerful guiding principle. This is the foundation upon which Fundamental Berlin was built—a design company that challenges conventional norms by integrating mathematical principles, artistic collaboration, and a human touch into their creations.

Founded by Gunnar Lohmann-Rönsch and Stephen Molloy, Fundamental Berlin is the result of a shared vision to create design objects that are both striking and functional. Their approach combines the precision of mathematics with a playful sense of experimentation, resulting in products that push the boundaries of traditional design while remaining deeply practical and accessible.

One of Fundamental Berlin's latest works is the SMILE paperweight, a collaboration with Berlin-based video artist Christoph Gromer. This piece captures Gromer's joyful celebration of light in a sculptural form, combining a futuristic aesthetic with traditional craftsmanship in hand-cut and polished lead crystal glass.

Stephen Molloy’s journey into the world of design began with his passion for architecture, which he pursued academically and professionally. This experience instilled in him a belief that true design goes beyond mere appearances; it must serve a purpose and resonate on a personal level. This philosophy is deeply embedded in the DNA of Fundamental Berlin, where every product is conceived with the idea that design is not just about aesthetics, but about creating something with lasting significance.

Fundamental Berlin’s designs are characterized by clean lines, geometric forms, and a minimalist aesthetic that speaks to both modern and timeless sensibilities. Yet, what truly sets their work apart is the warmth and emotional connection that each piece fosters—a reflection of the founders’ belief in the power of well-crafted objects. Whether it’s the mathematically inspired forms or the collaborations with artists like Christoph Gromer, each piece from Fundamental Berlin is thoughtfully engineered to balance form and function.

Under the guidance of Stephen and Gunnar, Fundamental Berlin has grown into a respected name in the design world, with their work featured in exhibitions and design fairs around the globe. However, for the founders, the real success of the company lies in its ability to create objects that resonate with people, becoming meaningful parts of their daily lives.

Fundamental Berlin’s approach to design mirrors the personal philosophies of its founders: that the best design is thoughtful, purposeful, and enduring. Whether it’s a piece of furniture, a home accessory, or a larger architectural project, their work continues to explore the intersection of form, function, and human experience.

Join Fundamental Berlin on September 5th, 2024, at the Himmel über Design Unique Event, where they will showcase their latest work, including the SMILE paperweight, and discuss their design approach and philosophy alongside other visionary creators like Christopher Sitzler.
