At La Cotte Farm, a working wine estate just outside Franschhoek in South Africa's Cape Winelands, thirty years of farmland have been rebuilt one room at a time by a single, unmistakable eye.

We arrived at La Cotte expecting a farm stay in the usual sense and found something closer to a design studio spread across a working vineyard. The following morning, Dominic Touwen, the designer and visionary behind the property's transformation, walked us through it himself. What became clear on that walk is that nothing at La Cotte was left to convention. The old oaks and the Cape Dutch manor house set the historical tone, but everything built or restored since has been treated as its own design problem, worth solving on its own terms rather than defaulting to what a Winelands hotel is expected to look like.

A boutique hotel is not defined by its amenities. It is defined by how few of its decisions feel accidental.

That intention showed most clearly in the rooms themselves. We moved through several of the Orchard and Forest cottages, each with its own colour story, its own artwork, its own textile pattern, so that staying in one felt closer to visiting a considered private home than a hotel room. The villa took that idea further still, with a scale and privacy suited to a longer stay. Two other spaces stood out on the tour. Champers Bar, tucked into the estate with a playful nod to British rowing heritage, turned what could have been a standard hotel bar into a proper destination for an evening drink. And the restaurant in the Manor House, built around the same restraint as the rooms, made clear that the design at La Cotte was never only about where you sleep.
